Trevor Gillmeister says Queensland selectors should have no concerns over the form of the club’s two Maroons candidates heading into this year’s State of Origin series.

Nate Myles and Ashley Harrison might be short on victories with their teammates at the moment, but Gillmeister says individually the two long-term Maroons have been in good touch.

The Gold Coast are enduring the season from hell at the moment, backing up their wooden spoon from last season with a worst-ever start to the new NRL year featuring only one win from six matches.

Coupled with that is the speculation swirling around about the club’s future due to its financial plight.

But one of the precious few highlights for the Titans has been the form of Myles, who joined the club this season from the Roosters.

Myles was one of a host of big name stars to head to Robina this year – along with Jamal Idris, Beau Champion and Luke Douglas – and was probably considered the riskiest proposition of the lot given his controversy-plagued final season at Bondi.

But not only have Myles proven to be the best buy of the lot of them, he would be challenging Cronulla’s Paul Gallen for the mantle of the most in-form forward over the early weeks of the competition, with his performances inspirational in a team down on confidence and form.

“I reckon Nate is probably playing some of the best footy we have ever seen him play,” Gillmeister said. “He has just been outstanding for us every week.

“It is a real wrap for the bloke too, because he came up here under the spotlight a bit because of off field stuff in Sydney, but right from day one he has been exceptional.

“Sometimes it’s easy to look like a genius when you’re playing in a winning team, but it’s harder to play your best footy when the going is tough.

“But I can tell you, Nate has been fantastic. His mental approach, preparation and performances have been first class. You can see how much winning means to him, and how much losing hurts him. He’s giving it everything he’s got.”

Gilly said Harrison too was bringing his usual consistency and appetite to work to a Titans scrum that Gilly says is going pretty well despite what the points table would indicate.

“The forwards have been going great for us, they really have,” he said. “The thing is, we are just down on execution in a few areas, and that is what is costing us games.

“We seem to be in that mindset at the moment where they let the opposition run up a score before they get angry and switch on, but we all know we are not far away from getting it right down here.

“But blokes like Ash just maintain that level in their performance, and he delivers what the team needs every week.

“I know if Mal needs Nate and Ash to do the job again this year for Queensland, they won’t let anyone down.”
